In the United States, this is a day to give thanks. I supposed that every day you should really think about what you are thankfully for right? Many favorite memories of Thanksgiving are staying in my jammies all morning while watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. The amazing food was just the side to the parade for me.
This is a great time of year to teach your 2nd and 3rd graders about gratitude. Life is about so much more than conventional education right?
There are so many ways to get involved in your community. Some 7 year olds might be a little overwhelmed serving food to those less fortunate but you could head to a food bank and help fill food bags for families. Honestly, a simple conversation with your children is a great start. The Most Thankful Thing is a great book to help approach being thankful. I'm Thankful Each Day and Thanksgiving Is For Giving Thanks are also great books.
Going out into your community may just be too much for your family right now so start in your own home! I LOVE the idea of a Gratitude Garland that you make either before your holiday meal or even after it. Write things that you’re grateful for on paper leaves that you string up and hang up on a prominent wall. Make extra leaves so guests can participate! Keep it up throughout the holidays and by the end of the year it will be a great decoration!
Whatever you and your family do during this time of year, I hope that you enjoy your time together! It is too easy to get wrapped up in the craziness of the holidays and forget about the things that are TRULY important.....family, friends and you!!
What are some ways that you teach gratitude in your family?? Let me know because we can always use more ideas!
